Volume #168: The Markers “Garage Mirage” & The Jotunn “Summoner”
2024
How do you do my friends and countrymen? Glory to you and your house. I, Z.M. Delgado, have once again sat down at my mighty laptop with new music to discuss. Can I get a “Huzzah!” Anyway, this week we will be discussing two EP’s that have beamed across the cosmos and arrived directly in my ears.
The Markers - “Garage Mirage”
First on the docket is “Garage Mirage” brought to us by Pittsburgh, PA’s The Markers. This is a three piece band made up of Kc (Drums/Vocals), Shawn (Bass/Vocals) and Marty (Guitar). Their style is some sort of Punk/Indy Rock hybrid. The collection “Garage Mirage” is five song EP released in November of this year. Of the five songs on the EP I would put the first two on the Punk side of the coin, while the remaining three fall decidedly onto the Indy spectrum. My favorites are the Punkier songs. The title track has an undeniably Rockin’ energy to it that no doubt has crowds dancing. Meanwhile “5 Years” has a driving tempo, grooving riffs and some Guitar solo action that I really dig. The three other tracks are good in their own right, but they have a much more mellow Indy vibe to them, that reminds me of the legendary Modest Mouse. I particularly enjoy “Hit The Ice,” which has more good guitar work and some great backing vox. All in all this is a solid collection of songs. If you’re into Indy stuff then definitely check out The Markers, they’re pretty sweet.
The Jotunn – “Summoner”
Next on our agenda is “Summoner” by Cleveland’s own The Jotunn. According to their bandcamp, this beast of a band is constructed from five individuals Paul, Shawn, Kris, Kenny and Cole (They don’t specify who does what.) They simply describe themselves as “Metal” though I believe you could classify them as Melodic Deathcore, or something like it. “Summoner” is a three song juggernaut released in August of 2024. All three songs on this EP are pure punishment. They are backbreaking in their intensity and quite simply put... powerful. The title track is like a saw blade spinning, chewing and ripping through the eardrums of all who listen. “This Life Must End in Fear” had great riffs and a sledgehammer drum pattern that really drives the verse home. Finally “Ulceration” punches you right in the gut, while calling forth melodies that can tug at the heart. The song closes with a brutal chant of “Onward we march! Forward to Fight!” then fades out for about two minutes. If you are like me, a huge fan of their debut album “Graveworshipper,” you know what to expect. Suffice to say if you like heavy ass shit with nasty vocals, check out The Jotunn today.

So there you have it, my fellow Rustbelt Rockers. Two EP’s from two different ends of the Rock N’ Roll spectrum. I suggest you check out both records because, no matter what the genre, they are both damn good music. Well I suppose I will cut this off here, before I ramble any further. Thanks for reading.
Until next time, Rock on, Rustbelt,
